Final Blog

I still am David. But after this class I realized a whole lot more things in society influenced me in my life. The American Culture has had effects on me and the way I think. The media also effects me. Society tells me in order to be a "man" I have to be more aggressive. It also tells me I am a teen and that I need to be more responsible but I can't be trusted. I am labeled by a social class, and that I have certain expectaions by society for being "white". Most of my goals stayed the same from before, but now in the world I want to pay more attention to all these things I learned in class, and how so many things in society effect me and I don't even realize it. I guess I'm trying to say I want to think and be able to achknowledge when society is effecting the way I think or act.

Crash:If race is not scientifically based, what is it based on?

Some characteristics that our Society uses to define race is; color of your skin, and religon. Most of the time Society defines our race by what color we are but occasionally you will here a "white" person refer to there race as Jewish. A scene that refer's to race is when that cop gets in an argument with that lady because, he's mad he can't help his dad after his dad lost everything for protecting and helping out "her people". He refers to her people as her race and he is defining her race as African American. I don't think ever in my life (until this class) race has been something different than the color of someone's skin.

Race: Race and Biology

Some assumptions I have made about race is that it is the color of your skin. I think everyone thinks of race that way. We are taught incorrect things about race. We learn from our parents and people around us that the color of you skin determines your race. For example, if your white your caucasian, if your brown your hispanic, if your black than your African America. But really those are biological differences not race. Schools don't teach us how to define race because, of all the racism our country's past holds.

Social Class: Monopobility

I am not 100% sure if my family has moved up very much. My grandparents on my dad's side were immigrants from Italy and my Grandfather worked many labor jobs, but retired as a plastic engineer and his wife didnt work. On my mom's side my grandfather was a methodist priest and his wife was a part time librarian. My dad also works as a plastic engineer like his father, and my mom works as a secretary and her new husband also works as an engineer. So I think in some ways i'm growing up in the same social class that they did. I'm not sure where I'm going to end up in regards to social class.

Social Class: Tammy's story

Tammy wanted to be a teacher but grew up in poverty. Its very hard to move up in social class espicially when you start so low. Now her son wants to be an archietecht or a lawyer but chances are he won't move up a social class, or if he does he won't move up much. It's really sad but its true and I think that proves something wrong in our society and that the "American Dream" is not as easily attainable as we think.

America's Social Class

America's Social Class is very messed up. It is thought of to be very good and everyone is equal but that is far from the truth. The wealthy continue to get wealthier while the poor get poorer. The richest person in the United States has so much more compared to the average person. Racism still takes place. Minorties continue to live in poverty all over the United States. The United States is not what its made out to be there are a lot of problems

Deviance=Saints and Roughnecks at Stevenson

In the study of saints and roughnecks deviance must be perceived to be in order to be considered deviant.  We have many groups of saints and roughnecks at our school.  They're are that group of wealthy, dressed well kids who drink do drugs steal and the list goes on.  Yet they have so much money and are well dressed they look like good kids you would never think were committing illegal acts.  So many kids at this school also buy there way out of trouble.  When they do get busted they buy a lawyer and get the smallest punishment imaginable.  There are also roughnecks in this school.  The roughnecks might not be poor but they dress in more baggy clothes and tend to slack off in classes.  These kids are always called down to the deans office and harassed by police and school officals.  I have witnessed it myself.  Its because, the saints are so careful and as soon as they do get in trouble the plead and beg for mercy, and people think they are actually sorry for there actions when they are not.  The roughnecks do things that are not even as bad as what the saints do but get the maximum punishment you can imagine.  I think this is really messed up and one of the reasons I don't like this school.
